Greenfield Veterinary Hospital opened its doors in 1979. The owner, Frank Babik, VMD operated as a solo practitioner at this location until Sean Winnie, DVM joined the practice in 2001. In 2006 when Dr. Babik decided to reduce the number of hours he wished to practice, Dr. Winnie took over as medical director. Dr. Babik officially retired in November 2008.

Since 2006 the hospital has undergone a series of upgrades and changes to serve the needs of our clients better. New radiographic equipment for more expedient and improved radiographic quality were acquired in 2007. An endoscope to assist animals with chronic ear infections was also purchased in 2007. In 2008, we upgraded to a human grade complete blood count (CBC) machine to provide accurate results in 90 seconds. We also modernized our facility with a veterinary software management program for invoicing, vaccine tracking, record keeping, inventory and billing/payments. Although transitioning from a completely paper based practice to a paperless practice is far from complete, we are making major strides in reaching that ultimate goal. Our recycling and environmental goals are set for the future and achievable in the next couple of years.

There will also be some structural changes to the building forthcoming at the end of 2009 beginning of 2010 that should help accommodate more patients and provide better service for our existing clients as well as the new clients that join the GVH family every day.

Patty joined us in January of 2009. She was found by one of our clients in a dumpster suffering from frostbite on her ears and tail, a severe upper respiratory infection, she was severely emaciated, covered with motor oil and had multiple lacerations and abrasions.  The people that found her brought her in for treatment and to adopt her and to provide her a better life. She was hospitalized for more then 3 weeks before she was ready to go home to her new family.  She had to have her ears surgically cropped due to the frostbite and she lost the last several vertebrae at the end of her tail. Her lip was sutured due to a laceration and she was spayed.  She was also treated for her upper respiratory infection, tested for feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus, vaccinated, fed and loved.

Her new family came to pick her up and took her home. We were all extremely sad to see her go as we’d fallen for this precious little soul with her sweet look and unique personality. We had been searching for a hospital cat for a couple of months and were surprised at the roadblocks that had been put in our way. Several agencies in the Pittsburgh area refused to adopt to us knowing that the cat was going to live in a hospital.  The leaders of those agencies felt the risk to that animals’ life was too great and therefore refused the adoption.

As fate would have it however, Patty’s adoptive family returned her two days after they took her home because  their own precious cat did not accept Patty as a new resident. Although they too had fallen in love with her, they asked if we could please find her a good home. Gladly we offered and she’s been here ever since!

Patty as she looks today

Patty still on the mend from her surgeries and adapting to life at GVH. She had her own special spot back then.

Our resident birds, Julio (blue) and Enrique (yellow) in 2008. Sadly Julio passed away October 24, 2009.
